World number 36 Ben Shelton overcame a tough opponent in Taro Daniel in five gruelling sets to impress on his Wimbledon debut, earning plenty of new fans on Court 14. A return to the same court on Thursday certainly helps his cause against world number 60 Laslo Djere and the 20-year-old’s charisma should see him backed pretty much to the hilt in what could end up another five-set battle. 28-year-odl Djere is at his best on clay, on which he beat Shelton at the Cagliari Challenger last month, but he is a renowned scrapper across all surfaces who brings an excellent scalp on grass into the second round after outlasting serve-and-volleyer Maxime Cressy in four tight tiebreaks. Shelton has employed some serve-and-volley tactics on grass so far this swing to suggest tiebreaks are in the offing here and that gives plenty of alternatives to a tricky result. Shelton, who reached the quarter-finals at the Australian Open on his debut in January, should have enough to come through here but take the youngster to earn at least two sets and add a tiebreak for value to leave the winner up to chance.
