20-year-old Ben Shelton set a career-high ATP world ranking of 35th earlier this season after producing a stunning run to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open on his debut in January. The American had struggled to match that intensity practically ever since to bring a 12-20 record into the US Open but he looks ready to compete with confidence here after coming back from a set down to oust Pedro Cachin and taking the first set from former champion Dominic Thiem before the Austrian was forced to retire on Wednesday. That being said, world number 77 Aslan Karatsev is one of the biggest outliers in the draw as a former world number 14 who went one better than Shelton in Melbourne in 2021 – becoming the first qualifier to make the last four there in 40 years. A straight-sets victory over up-and-comer Jiri Lehecka on Monday and a four-setter over Roberto Carballes Baena probably makes the Russian favourite on current form but do not underestimate what a home crowd can do for Shelton’s raw potential and vast charisma.
