World number 15 Belinda Bencic received a bye to the second round of the Guadalajara Masters as the fifth seed in this inordinately underpowered draw and she could be one of many players set to benefit from a sever lack of top 10 talent this week. The 26-year-old started 2023 off on fire with two WTA titles won on hardcourts but she suffered a first round defeat in San Diego last week to continue some very erratic form on tour, with runs to the quarter-finals of the Canada Masters and the round of 16 at the US Open followed by early exits. World number 101 Taylor Townsend is a player on the rise after an impressive run to the third round of the US Open saw her stun 19th seed Beatriz Haddad-Maia and she beat, backing up plenty of recent success in Women’s Doubles – including the Cincinnati title alongside Leylah Fernandez.
The 27-year-old beat Ajla Tomljanovic in straight sets on Sunday to get a strong foothold in the draw but she will have to be at her best to beat Bencic, with the Guadalajara crowd ready to back her as a popular underdog. Leave this head-scratcher out of an accumulator but otherwise take Townsend to earn at least a set to leave the victor, most likely Bencic, up to chance.
