THE PREDICTION
World number six Ons Jabeur overcame an early onslaught by Emma Raducanu to win comfortably in straight sets on Wednesday. The 29-year-old will be backed to the hilt by the Abu Dhabi crowd all week as a true trailblazer in the sport but she has struggled to find her best level since losing the Wimbledon final last summer, despite finding enough grit to claim the Ningbo title in September. World number 13 Beatriz Haddad-Maia was part of several of the longest matches on tour last year and she continued that effort on Wednesday, overcoming Magda Linette in just under four hours on court. The 27-year-old ended last season with her third and most prestigious title to date at the WTA Elite Trophy and she should be targeting more this year if she can keep her currently tireless energy flowing.
Haddad-Maia came back from a set down to beat Jabeur in the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros last summer but they share a 1-1 head-to-head record after the Tunisian took their first encounter in Stuttgart. The Brazilian earned at least a set in both encounters so back her to do so here to leave the result up to chance.
