THE PREDICTION

World number 20 Beatriz Haddad-Maia beat Leylah Fernandez in a predictably gruelling three-set battle on Tuesday, avenging a loss to the Canadian by the same scoreline in Montreal last month. That loss started a streak of now five matches in which the Brazilian has seen a deciding set and it would be little surprise to see another three-setter here in a first meeting with up-and-comer Marta Kostyuk. World number 45 Kostyuk beat Magda Linette in straight sets on Tuesday to get a strong foothold in at the San Diego Open in similar conditions to the Austin Open back in March, where she won her maiden WTA title. That win over Linette snapped a four-match losing streak since the start of the hardcourt swing but Haddad-Maia has also been more fallible than she should be in recent weeks. Back the Brazilian to edge through outright or consider a one off on three sets.
