World number 12 Beatriz Haddad-Maia avoided a tough opener against Paula Badosa when the Spaniard withdrew from the Canada Masters, beating lucky loser Magdalena Frech in straight sets on Tuesday. The 27-year-old suffered what looked to be a serious injury in the round of 16 at Wimbledon last month and it is a surprise to see her back on court so soon, so her fitness could be a factor in a tougher match like this against a home hopeful in Laylah Fernandez. Former world number 13 Fernandez is desperately seeking a deep run on tour to rediscover her once imperious fight and it could well come this week after a strong opening win over Peyton Stearns. The 20-year-old finished runner-up to Emma Raducanu at the US Open two years ago after upsetting a whole host of major champions, past and future, but she has struggled to find that level practically ever since.
Haddad-Maia beat the Canadian in straight sets at this exact stage of the Canada Masters last summer but this should come a little closer.
