World number 13 Beatriz Haddad-Maia conceded just four games against Sorana Cirstea to blast through a match that had looked set to sail past three hours. The 27-year-old has been part of most of the WTA’s longest matches this season as an impressive scrapper who can occasionally struggle t put players away but she has played well so far this fortnight to reach the round of 16 at Wimbledon for the first time. Haddad-Maia claimed both of her WTA titles back-to-back on grass at Birmingham and Nottingham last summer, and she finished runner-up to Simona Halep at the Canada Masters later that year, but she had underachieved at Grand Slams until last month’s incredible run to the semi-finals at Roland-Garros.
ELENA RYBAKINA
World number three Elena Rybakina has played herself right back into form at Wimbledon to look well capable of defending her maiden Grand Slam title claimed here last summer. The 24-year-old suffered with a virus last month that saw her withdraw from Roland-Garros and come here underprepared but she has visibly improved with each passing round, conceding just two games to Katie Boulter under the lights on Centre Court late on Saturday. Rybakina was a surprise finalist last summer, upsetting Ons Jabeur from a set down to stun Centre Court, but she has since proved herself every bit a future world number one by finishing runner-up at the Australian Open and taking two Masters titles already this season from Indian Wells and Rome.
THE PREDICTION
This should be Elena Rybakina’s biggest test yet at Wimbledon as she faces battle-hardened Beatriz Haddad-Maia, who leads their head-to-head record 2-0 with two upsets claimed this season. Haddad-Maia came back from a set down to beat the Kazakh at the Abu Dhabi Open in February and then took the first set in their match at the Stuttgart Open on clay before Rybakina was forced to retire injured and grass is, arguably, both players’ best surface. If Rybakina plays like she did on Saturday night against Boulter she can take her first win from the Brazilian in straight sets, such was the quality, but there is plenty of scope for an upset here. Take Rybakina to win outright or consider a one-off on Haddad-Maia to snatch a set.
