World number seven Elena Rybakina beat Jule Niemeier in straight sets on Wednesday in her first match back since finishing runner-up to Petra Kvitova at the Miami Open on the 1st of April. The 23-year-old came so close to completing the Sunshine Double after claiming her first Masters title at Indian Wells but she is clearly on a ride to the very top of the sport this season after also finishing runner-up to Aryna Sabalenka at the Australian Open in January. World number 14 Beatriz Haddad-Maia is one of the few players to have beaten Rybakina this season after she came back from a set down in the quarter-finals of the Abu Dhabi Open in their first ever encounter on tour. The 26-year-old has struggled to hit top gear in more recent tournaments, though, but a win over Martina Trevisan on Tuesday is an excellent result on clay despite the fact that her opponent was forced to retire in the second set. Rybakina should be winning this in straight sets but take her outright inside an accumulator.
