THE PREDICTION
Former world number two Barbora Krejcikova survived a potential upset against Xiyu Wang on Sunday to level their head-to-head at 2-2 and improve on a choppy opener over Danka Kovinic. The 27-year-old should be considered a genuine title contender here in Madrid as one of the very best clay-courters on tour, as her 2021 Roland-Garros title attests to, and she claimed her first Masters title back in February at world number one Iga Swiatek’s expense. World number 33 Petra Martic is always a threat on her favoured clay, though, and she should not be underestimated after ousting Anna Kalinskaya on Sunday who, in turn, took out Elena Rybakina. It is surprising to find that this is the first meeting on tour between them but back Krejcikova to come through outright as the more consistent and controlled of two excellent disruptors.
