THE PREDICTION
Liudmila Samsonova beat Barbora Krejcikova in two tight sets at this exact stage of the Abu Dhabi Open this time last season and we could be in for more of the same here. World number 15 Samsonova brought a four-match losing streak into Abu Dhabi but she has conceded just five games so far this week, ousting Anhelina Kalinina and Lesia Tsurenko to look a dark horse for the title. The 25-year-old ended up runner-up to Belinda Bencic here last season, one full of near misses after finishing runner-up to Iga Swiatek at the Beijing Masters final and to Jessica Pegula at the Canada Masters, and she will be desperate to go one better as she targets a first title since late 2022.
World number 12 Krejcikova was in control of her round of 16 clash with Sara Sorribes Tormo before the Spaniard was forced to retire early in the second set.
