World number 18 Barbora Krejcikova beat Petra Martic in straight sets on Thursday to look a strong contender in Zhengzhou. The 27-year-old won the San Diego Open last month to complement her Dubai Masters titles from February but she will be disappointed with her season overall, particularly in Grand Slams. World number 43 Lesia Tsurenko should put up a challenge here after two impressive straight-set results over up-and-comer Diana Shnaider and 10th seed Donna Vekic. The 34-year-old is yet to drop a set this week from qualifiers through to the quarter-finals and she could be a real threat here with a 1-0 lead over Krejcikova in their head-to-head, contributing heavily to Krejcikova’s poor Grand Slam record with a shock win in the first round at Roland-Garros in June. Back Krejcikova to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
