Former world number two Barbora Krejcikova beat fellow Czech Sara Bejlek in straight sets on Monday for a solid opener in Melbourne. The 2021 Roland-Garros champion is something of an outlier in the draw as the 20th seed after spending much of last season working her way back from an elbow injury but she started the year strongly with a run to the quarter-finals here before defeat to Madison Keys. 27-year-old Krejcikova will start her Australian Open Women’s Doubles title defence on Wednesday alongside Katerina Siniakova after this kind looking second round fixture with Clara Burel. World number 130 Burel is better than her current ranking suggests and she qualified well last week to make the main draw before a straight-sets win over wildcard Talia Gibson on Monday but this looks too steep a climb.
