THE PREDICTION
Both world number 63 Roberto Carballes Baena and number 77 Aslan Karatsev caused significant upsets on Monday but 30-year-old Carballes Baena’s was by far the more surprising. The Spaniard claimed the biggest ranking win of his career over a clearly out-of-sorts world number four Holger Rune in four sets to continue what has proved to be his best season yet, with a second ATP title claimed at the Marrakech Open back in April. Hardcourt conditions favour his opponent, though, in former world number 14 Karatsev. The 29-year-old has spent much of the past two years searching for his previously exhilarating brand of tennis that saw him reach the semi-finals of the Australian Open in 2021 but a run to the semi-finals of the Madrid Masters in May this year suggested a resurgence was on the cards soon. Karatsev beat rising star Jiri Lehecka in comfortable straight sets on Monday to look dialled in in New York and taking him to come through the outright winner here feels reasonable despite RCB’s exploits.
