THE PREDICTION
21-year-old Jiri Lehecka set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 29th on Sunday after finishing runner-up to Sebastian Baez at the Winston-Salem Open yesterday. The Czech is enjoying an excellent sophomore season after first impressing last season, with January’s run to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open proof of what he can do on his favoured hardcourts. Former world number 14 Aslan Karatsev famously went one further in Melbourne the season before, becoming the first qualifier to do this century, but the Russian has struggled to find anything like his best level for the majority of the past two years since winning the Sydney Tennis Classic in 2022. A brief flurry of form saw Karatsev reach the semi-finals of the Madrid Masters back in May but he has looked well off it again since, winning just four of his last 10. A first meeting between the two could end up one of the most enthralling matches of the first round if both bring their best but it remains to be seen how Lehecka reacts to losing his maiden tour final on Saturday. Back the Czech to win at least two sets as the likelier of two very capable victors.
