THE PREDICTION

This should be a thrilling first encounter on tour between world number 12 Frances Tiafoe, at a career-high here in Paris, and former world number 14 Aslan Karatsev on his way back to form. 25-year-old Tiafoe enjoyed a comfortable three-set opener over Filip Krajinovic on Monday to get a steady foothold at Roland-Garros but he has struggled to match the intensity that saw him claim a second ATP title, and a first on clay, at the Houston Open last month. World number 62 Karatsev blasted through qualifying as the top seed there and then looked excellent in a tough opener over Alexei Popyrin, ousting the Aussie in four sets to bring some battle-hardened form into this likely thriller. The Russian seemed to run out of steam in the semi-finals of the Madrid Open earlier this month, losing from a set-up to eventual runner-up Jan-Lennard Struff, but a victory over Daniil Medvedev in the round of 16 there is proof of what he is capable with some confidence after such a long time struggling in the wilderness.

Take both players to earn at least a set here or Karatsev to earn at least two as the just-about likelier of two top players to edge through.
