19-year-old Ashlyn Kruger set a career-high WTA world ranking of 108th in June after stunning former world number Victoria Azarenka at the Libema Open on grass but it took until yesterday to claim her next tour-level victory. The American conceded just five games to Kateryna Baindl for a strong start at a tournament of this level and she faces an excellent opportunity to reach a rare quarter-final against world number 140 Jessika Ponchet. 26-year-old Ponchet beat the ever-ailing Viktorija Golubic in straight sets on Monday to get a strong foothold in at Osaka but Krueger has more weapons required to claim this first encounter. This is a tough round to make an accumulator out of in Osaka but backing the American to win outright seems a reasonable call given their respective recent results.
