THE PREDICTION
World number two Aryna Sabalenka could have become world number one if she out-performed Iga Swiatek at Roland-Garros but the Belarussian just fell short in a thrilling three-set defeat to Karolina Muchova in the semi-finals. However, the 25-year-old certainly, at least at this stage, has the better tools for grass than her rival and she will be a clear title contender at Wimbledon in two weeks’ time alongside the likes of reigning champion Elena Rybakina, Swiatek and perhaps outsiders Petra Kvitova and Ons Jabeur. A straight-sets victory over veteran Vera Zvonareva was a solid way to start as the top seed here in Berlin but this will be considerably tougher against world number 13 Veronika Kudermetova, who finished runner-up at the Libema Open on grass on Sunday. 26-year-old Kudermetova has enjoyed some serious form in recent months and she played well on Wednesday to oust Qinwen Zheng in straight sets, reacting superbly to her defeat in Rosmalen.
Kudermetova beat Sabalenka in three sets in the first round here last summer but she will face a totally different version of the powerhouse top seed this time around. Sabalenka leads their head-to-head 2-1 at tour level and she can extend that with an outright win here.
