World number five Aryna Sabalenka should be considered a genuine title contender at the Australian Open after finishing runner-up to Caroline Garcia at the WTA Finals late last season. The Belarussian also made the semi-finals at the US Open before defeat to eventual champion Iga Swiatek but she beat the Pole in Fort Worth amongst her WTA Finals results over the current top three players on tour. Sabalenka started 2023 by winning her 11th WTA title at Adelaide 1 and she takes a five-match winning streak into the second round in Melbourne after beating Tereza Martincova in straight sets on Tuesday.
THE PREDICTION
This could be the match of day on Thursday between one of the hardest hitters in Aryna Sabalenka and world number 51 Shelby Rogers, who struggles to find her best until she is facing the best on tour. 30-year-old Rogers set a career-high WTA world ranking of 30th late last year after stunning the high-quality field in San Diego before losing the final in three sets to Daria Kasatkina and she is the last player to beat Ash Barty on tour when she upset the Aussie at the US Open in 2021. Sabalenka should need a top 10 player to oust her in this form but Rogers can occasionally become a world-beater. Sabalenka leads their head-to-head 2-0 but their last meeting was a proper three-set battle at the Cincinnati Masters in August. Back the fifth seed to win outright.
