World number 94 Arthur Rinderknech grabbed his most impressive result in at least 12 months with a straight-sets upset over eighth seed Jiri Lehecka on Thursday, delighting home crowds in Marseille. The 28-year-old was knocking on the door of the top 40 two years ago, reaching a maiden tour final in Adelaide before defeat to Thanasi Kokkinakis, but a poor 2023 saw him drift quite suddenly away. World number 13 Grigor Dimitrov knows all about drifting away from a peak but the Bulgarian has been working hard to develop a new mentality on court since summer that continues to pay dividends. The 32-year-old beat Sebastian Korda in straight sets on Thursday to open his Marseille account and he looks to be the slight favourite for the title this week based on his excellent run to the Brisbane 500 trophy this time last month – a first title since his most prestigious at the 2017 ATP Finals. Rinderknech will be emboldened by a shock result and backed by a partisan crowd but this new, grittier Grigor Dimitrov should be able to reach the semi-finals all the same.
