THE PREDICTION

19-year-old Arthur Fils will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of around 44th after an incredible five-set victory over in-form Tallon Griekspoor on Tuesday. The Frenchman had lost both of his debuts at Roland-Garros and Wimbledon this summer to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina but overcoming the 24th seed is a thoroughly encouraging way to make your first impression in New York. Fils won his maiden ATP title on home clay at the Lyon Open back in May but he also impressed indoors in France with two semi-finals reached in Montpellier and Moselle to show hardcourt prowess early. Fellow youngster Matteo Arnaldi also won his US Open debut after Jason Kubler was force to retire from their second set and the Italian will also set a career-high ATP world ranking of around 59th for his efforts. Arnaldi and Fils have both produced their best performances on clay so far, although Fils’ win on Tuesday is perhaps the new benchmark where the Frenchman is concerned, and the pair look set to enjoy plenty more matches than this first over the next decade as contemporaries. Back Fils to earn at least two sets on this occasion to leave the victor up to chance.
