19-year-old Arthur Fils set a career-high ATP world ranking of 58th after claiming his maiden ATP title at the Lyon Open on clay back in May. The Frenchman got his Hamburg 500 campaign underway strongly on Tuesday with a straight-sets victory over Daniel Elahi Galan but he faces one of the better players on clay this year in Dusan Lajovic next. World number 60 Lajovic claimed the second title of his career at the Banja Luka Open back in April, stunning both Andrey Rublev and Novak Djokovic en-route, but after suffering a drab spell since he snapped a six-match losing streak on Tuesday with an encouraging three-set victory over Miomir Kecmanovic. This is a tricky call between Fils’ clear potential on the surface and beyond or Lajovic’s high ceiling on his favoured surface, particularly as the Serb is one of the more erratic performers on tour.
