32-year-old Arantxa Rus has burst into form on the ITF circuit in recent months, winning three titles on clay in Spain, her native Netherlands and most recently in France where she beat Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the Contrexeville final. The Dutchwoman has set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 60th from absolutely out of the blue and she overcame recent Hungarian Grand Prix champion Maria Timofeeva in three sets on Tuesday to look a creditable threat here in Hamburg. World number 66 Nadia Podoroska lost to Timofeeva in three sets in the semi-finals of Budapest last week but the Argentine is steadily improving on her favoured clay after returning from injury earlier this season. A straight-sets win over Viktoriya Tomova on Monday is a solid start to her Hamburg campaign but Rus’ recent run should not be underestimated. A first tour-level meeting between the two seems likely to need a decider so back Rus to earn at least a set here or risk the three set option.
