32-year-old Arantxa Rus will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of around 57th after overcoming Nadia Podoroska in three sets on Wednesday, continuing her sudden serious form on clay. The Dutchwoman has won three Challenger titles in quick succession over the last few months to suddenly look a contender here in Hamburg for what would be her maiden WTA title in what has been a long career. 21-year-old Eva Lys is at the opposite end of her promising career and she beat Panna Udvardy in straight sets on Wednesday to maintain a very impressive campaign on home clay. The German stunned second seed Mayar Sherif in the first round to stake her claim and she will be well backed by a partisan atmosphere in this first meeting with Rus. Three sets seem likely than two here but whilst Rus’ recent form cannot be ignored she has conceded a set in each of her previous rounds so taking Lys to earn at least a set looks the sensible way to avoid picking a winner.
