Former world number 11 Alize Cornet overcame Yanina Wickmayer in three sets on Tuesday to build on a decent qualifying campaign over the weekend. The 34-year-old had not won a tour-level match since the start of August, to see her ranking drift outside of the top 100, but she still possesses the ability to go on a deep run when her instinctive game falls into place. World number 45 Arantxa Rus won her maiden WTA title at the Hamburg Open in late July, finally breaking her duck on the main tour at 32 years old despite enjoying a long and illustrious career on the ITF circuit, and she has posed more of a threat since. The Dutchwoman is the top seed this week at world number 45 in what is a wide open and slightly sparse field, meaning the winner of this tournament is likely to be relatively surprising. Cornet leads their head-to-head 2-0 but Rus has been the more dependable performer in recent times. Back Rus to win at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
