THE PREDICTION

World number 78 Yafan Wang takes on number 79 Anna-Karolina Schmiedlova here in what looks, at least on paper, to be a tight contest. 29-year-old Wang is a renowned scrapper who impressed on her run to the third round at the Australian Open two weeks ago, losing 10-8 in the deciding tiebreak to eventual runner-up Qinwen Zheng, and she hit the ground running on Tuesday with a solid opener over Alina Korneeva. Schmiedlova, also 29, endured more of a laboured victory over Mai Hontama on Tuesday but she will be pleased to have snapped a two-match losing streak in the bud. The Slovak can be a tough all-courter at her best but Wang looked a dark horse for the title on her form coming into Hua Hin and she should enjoy the lion’s share of the support as an Asian player in Thailand. Back Wang to win outright.

TIP: YAFAN WANG TO WIN
