24-year-old Rebeka Masarova claimed the biggest win of her young career on Monday with a remarkable straight-sets upset over eighth seed Maria Sakkari. The Spaniard will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of around 62nd for her trouble but more importantly inherit Sakkari’s eighth of the draw, handing her a huge opportunity to make the round of 16. World number 64 Anna-Karolina Schmiedlova enjoyed a similar opportunity at Roland-Garros in June when she stunned Veronika Kudermetova in the first round en-route to a round of 16 exit to Coco Gauff. The 28-year-old overcame Kateryna Baindl in three sets on Monday to reach the second round in New York for a third year on the spin but she has not reached the third since 2015 to look the slight underdog. Masarova has the better hardcourt results this season, even before Monday’s exploits, but backing up her win over Sakkari will be a tough task. Take the Spaniard to earn at least a set as the likelier of two capable victors to leave this one up to chance.
