THE PREDICTION
Former world number 11 Ana Sevastova has reached back-to-back quarter-finals since her return from maternity leave but Thursday’s straight-sets victory over old foe Sloane Stephens is her best result yet. The 33-year-old conceded just five games to second-seed Stephens to look a dark horse for the title in Austin and she will take confidence in her 3-0 tour-level head-to-head record over next opponent Anna-Karolina Schmiedlova, who has dropped sets in each of her wins so far. Former number 26 Schmiedlova has spent much of the past few seasons hovering around the 80s on tour but she is well capable of the occasional bright spot. Victory over Peyton Stearns on Wednesday was backed up with a solid result over Sachia Vickery but back Sevastova to earn at least a set as the likelier to come through this intriguing clash.
