World number 100 Anna-Karolina Schmiedlova provided one of the many upsets on Monday when she ousted 11th seed Veronika Kudermetova, who had just reached back to back semi-finals at Masters clay events, to the tune of just four conceded games. The 28-year-old set a career-high WTA world ranking of 26th back in 2015 but she has spent much of the last four years in the wilderness since winning her third WTA title at the Bogota Open in 2018. Schmiedlova has reached the third round in Paris on two occasions in 2014 and 2020 but her next opponent went one further on an explosive debut back in 2019 before falling away in recent seasons. World number 131 Aliona Bolsova conceded just three games to Kristina Kucova on Monday to make full use of her second chance as a lucky loser and she beat the Slovak in their only previous encounter at tour-level, on clay, in Bogota two years ago.
Schmiedlova’s victory over Kudermetova obviously stands out but it is often hard to back-up an upset in the following round away from the spotlight. Take Bolsova to earn at least a set and leave the result up to chance but it would be wise to keep this out of an accumulator.
