THE PREDICTION
World number 92 Anna Kalinskaya beat Jule Niemeier in straight sets late on Monday to get an impressive foothold in Osaka, backing-up an excellent return from injury at the US Open last time out. The 24-year-old beat Katerina Siniakova in straight sets in New York in her first match back on tour since suffering an unfortunate injury at the Italian Open in May, with a defeat to eventual quarter-finalist Sorana Cirstea in the next round suggesting she is in strong form already. The Russian had found her feet earlier this season and it remains to be seen what she can do with the rest of 2023 but this is no gimme against world number 161 Harriet Dart, who often finds her best tennis in these conditions. A three-set victory over fourth seed Linda Fruhvirtova is one of the Brit’s best results on tour but her opponent has been struggling a little lately to take some of the shine away. Kalinskaya should pose a relatively similar test to Fruhvirtova with a little more confidence behind her and backing the Russian to edge through outright looks a reasonable call.
