THE PREDICTION

This should be a fascinating third encounter of the season between World number six Elena Rybakina and number 57 Anna Kalinskaya. The pair will now meet for the third time in three months after Rybakina beat the Russian in three sets at the Miami Open, where she went on to finish runner-up to Petra Kvitova, but Kalinskaya won the rematch in Madrid two weeks ago – also in three sets. It seemed like a bit of an off day for Rybakina in Madrid but 24-year-old Kalinskaya is certainly enjoying the form of her career right now with a recent run to the quarter-finals of the Charleston ended too soon by injury after she stunned Victoria Azarenka on the green clay. 23-year-old Rybakina beat Jasmine Paolini in straight sets on Friday but the first set did not come as easily as it should. It would be understandable for the Kazakh to be feeling a little fatigued after the sheer amount of quality matches she has played in already this season but Kalinskaya leads their head-to-head 2-1 as things stand and she will know to apply pressure early here. The sensible concession is taking Rybakina to earn at least a set and the reasonable risk is taking the same option in favour of the Russian.
