Former world number three Elina Svitolina came back from a set down to beat Clara Burel on Friday in a hugely encouraging result for her return from maternity leave. The 28-year-old had not won a tour-level match this season until today, after coming back in early April, but three wins this week in Strasbourg will see her halve her current ranking of world number 508 and victory will push her back inside the top 200 ahead of schedule. 24-year-old Anna Blinkova can set a new career-high WTA world ranking of roughly 45th with victory here after an impressive straight-sets result over Lauren Davis on Friday. The Russian won her maiden tour final at Cluj-Napoca late last year on a hardcourt to take a 100% record into this first meeting but that is dwarfed by Svitolina’s record at this stage of a tournament with 16 titles won from a possible 19 played. The Ukrainian will be desperate to win here for her country against a Russian opponent but that may hinder as much as help. Expect the crowd to do their best to pull Svitolina over the line here as the outright winner, probably in three sets.
