World number 14 Daria Kasatkina beat Elise Mertens in straight sets on Tuesday to get a decent foothold in at the Canada Masters but she has been erratic at best this season. The 26-year-old finished runner-up to Madison Keys after a very impressive week in Eastbourne back in June, her second runners-up place this season, but she has struggled to impose herself on draws since. 24-year-old Anna Blinkova came into Montreal at a career-high WTA world ranking of 34th as she continues to enjoy her best season so far but she survived an early scare on Tuesday in a comeback win over struggling Shuai Zhang. A first meeting between the two Russians should be going Kasatkina’s in straight sets at her best but Blinkova has been a thorn in the side of many a top player this season to make this a match well worth leaving out of an accumulator. Take Kasatkina to win outright or consider at least a set for Blinkova.
