World number 15 Liudmila Samsonova finished runner-up to Belinda Bencic in Abu Dhabi last season and she looks desperate to rediscover that hot streak here after a 6-0 6-1 result over Lesia Tsurenko on Tuesday. The 25-year-old is at her best in these conditions but it was a season of excruciating close-calls in 2023 after also finishing runner-up at two Masters events in Montreal, to Jessica Pegula, and in Beijing, to Iga Swiatek, after beating Elena Rybakina in the semi-finals on both occasions. Samsonova snapped a concerning four-match losing streak with victory on Tuesday and that makes her a much more creditable threat in this clash with Anhelina Kalinina, who also snapped a four-match winless run with victory over Lucia Bronzetti. A first meeting between the two should suit Samsonova on her favoured hardcourt, particularly this one after beating a string filed through to the final 12 months ago.
