THE PREDICTION

Former world number two Anett Kontaveit set a career-high WTA world ranking of second last season before contracting covid-19 in April set her back for much of the rest of the year. The current world number 19 snapped a four-match losing streak on Tuesday with a comfortable win over Julia Grabher but her previous defeat was in finishing runner-up to Barbora Krejcikova at the Tallinn Open in October to suggest she is not far from her best. World number 45 Magda Linette beat Mayar Sherif in straight sets on Wednesday in one of the delayed matches due to adverse weather conditions on Tuesday and the Pole has been enjoying some of the best form of her career in recent times. The 30-year-old stunned Karolina Pliskova and Madison Keys at the Billie Jean King Cup finals last November and continued that excellent work for Poland at the United Cup at the start of 2023 before losing a rematch with Keys in the semi-finals. Kontaveit leads Linette 3-1 in their tour-level head-to-head but the pair have not met since 2020 and this could be a very different match-up. Back the Estonian to earn at least a set as the likelier of two very capable winners here in a tougher-than-it-looks fixture.
