THE PREDICTION

Former world number two Anett Kontaveit has endured an erratic last 12 months on tour to fall back as far as 82nd this week but the Estonian avoided an early upset with a commanding victory over Alycia Parks on Tuesday. The 27-year-old is at her best on the faster surfaces but she could beat anybody during her purple patch in late 2021 and she has plenty of time to rediscover that form. This looks too steep at this moment in time, though, against world number 16 Liudmila Samsonova. The 24-year-old would also prefer to be playing on a faster court but she blew Jelena Ostapenko away at this stage of the Madrid Open two weeks ago before a defeat to Irina-Camelia Begu. Neither player is currently anywhere near their best level for this first encounter but back Samsonova to earn at least a set as the just about likelier to come through.
