THE PREDICTION

This could be a thrilling start to old foes Grigor Dimitrov and Andy Murray’s 2024s as they face off for the 13th time in their illustrious careers. 32-year-old Dimitrov ended 2023 in some of his best form in recent years, perhaps ever since winning the ATP Finals in 2017, with a runners-up finish to Novak Djokovic at the Paris Masters taking him back up to world number 14. World number 42 Murray endured a pretty woeful second half to his 2023 after initially showing signs of promise and it remains to be seen how he fares early on. The former number one has usually played well across the Australian swing, finishing runner-up at the Australian Open a remarkable five times in his career, but it has been some time since we have seen as commanding a display as he is capable of. Dimitrov’s form could be anywhere at this point but assuming he feels even remotely like he did in late 2023 this looks like his match to lose. The Bulgarian beat Murray in comfortable straight sets at the US Open in September and backing him to edge this opener outright feels reasonable despite trailing the Brit 8-4 in their head-to-head.

TIP: GRIGOR DIMITROV TO WIN
