ANDREY RUBLEV
World number seven Andrey Rublev became only the ninth active male tennis player to have reached all four quarter-finals at Grand Slams after completing his set via a remarkable five-set victory over Alexander Bublik. The pair entertained Centre Court throughout their rematch of the Halle Open final from last month, where Bublik won in three sets, but the penultimate point of the match went viral after Rublev returned a fierce backhand should-be winner by the Kazakh with a diving volley from the back of the court. Rublev has yet to make it past the last eight at a Grand Slam but this is the 25-year-old’s eighth attempt to show for excellent consistency at this level.
NOVAK DJOKOVIC
World number two Novak Djokovic laboured to a four-set victory over Hubert Hurkacz’ imperious serving over two days’ play, taking the first two sets via tiebreaks on Sunday before returning to play on Monday afternoon. The 26-year-old now has 32 wins in a row at Wimbledon as the four-time defending champion here and despite the rise of Carlos Alcaraz on the other side of the draw he remains the very clear favourite to draw level with Roger Federer’s record eight titles at SW19. Djokovic is also chasing another attempt at becoming the first male player to achieve a calendar slam in the Open Era after winning the Australian Open in January and taking the lead in the Men’s singles record for the first time by winning his 23rd Grand Slam title at Roland-Garros.
THE PREDICTION
This could be one of the more entertaining encounters between Andrey Rublev and Novak Djokovic if the Russian brings the joy of his previous win through to the quarter-finals but it is unlikely. Rublev has a clear ceiling against the very top players on tour but the worst factor is that he totally believes that himself, with an inferiority complex and/or common sense not the right weapon to bring to this fight. Expect Djokovic to exert his aura throughout this clash on Tuesday as he will be desperate to come through as quickly as possible after playing three days in a row. Rublev has beaten Djokovic before, in Serbia no less, but he faces a much fitter version of the record Grand Slam holder in conditions that suit the Serb better than anyone. Djokovic leads their head-to-head 3-1 and he can be backed to emulate his straight-sets victory over the Russian at this stage of the Australian Open back in January.
