THE PREDICTION
World number seven Andrey Rublev played well to reach the Halle Open final last week but a three-set defeat to an inspired Alexander Bublik portrayed some of the Russian’s weaknesses. The 25-year-old has reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open, Roland-Garros and the US Open at least twice, thrice in New York, but his run to the round of 16 here in 2021 is his best effort so far at SW19. Rublev finally broke his Masters duck in April by winning the Monte-Carlo Open on clay but his robust, relentless hitting certainly favours the quicker surfaces and he could be a dark horse here with the right draw.
25-year-old Max Purcell comes into Wimbledon at a career-high ATP world ranking of 62nd after some excellent work on the Challenger circuit this season. The Aussie won the Men’s Doubles title here last season alongside Matthew Ebden to provide some confidence in this difficult opener in the singles but a first meeting Rublev should really only go one way. Rublev can sometimes get off to a slow start but the Russian can be backed to take this first meeting in straight sets.
