World number 59 Alex Molcan overcame Italian qualifier Stefano Napolitano in three sets on Thursday to get a foothold in Rome but he will need to seriously improve if he is to progress any further. World number six Andrey Rublev beat the Slovak in straight sets in their first meeting just last month to reach the Banja Luka Open final, where he eventually finished runner-up to an inspired Dusan Lajovic. 25-year-old Rublev played well in Madrid but lost to friend and compatriot Karen Khachanov in the round of 16 before the pair went on to win the Men’s Doubles title on Sunday. Rublev has been in serious form for a few months now and he looks more confident since finally claiming a first Masters title in Monte-Carlo. Molcan is well capable of forcing a third set here, though, to make taking Rublev to win outright the sensible call.
