THE PREDICTION
Former world number one Andy Murray won two of his 14 Masters titles here in Madrid in 2008 and 2015, although the former came when the tournament was still played indoors on a hardcourt. Just three of the Brit’s 46 career titles have come on clay over the years and he avoided the swing altogether last season to focus on his best chances on grass. Murray may well be regretting his decision to commit to a clay season this time around after a woeful performance against Alex de Minaur at the Barcelona Open last week but he should be better for it in Madrid, where the high-altitude conditions take some of the sting out of clay conditions for the less comfortable players.
It would not be a huge surprise, nor cause for significant concern, if 27-year-old Andrea Vavassori claims the biggest win of his career here in a first meeting with Murray as the Italian qualified well this week on his favoured surface. Vavassori set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 164th this week after recent results on clay, including a run to the quarter-finals of the Marrakech Open, and taking him to earn at least a set looks the shrewd move in avoiding siding with a player. The vast majority of Murray’s matches have gone to three sets this season.
