THE PREDICTION
22-year-old Elisabetta Cocciaretto came into Rome at a career-high WTA world ranking of 45th and she should snap that once again after beating Lauren Davis, to whom she lost her maiden WTA tour final in January, in commanding straight sets. The 22-year-old is a solid clay-court competitor who took Paula Badosa to three sets in a tight encounter at this stage of the Madrid Open and this could be one of the matches of the round with the home crowd fully behind her. World number 25 Anastasia Potapova recently burst into the form of her career at the Miami Open, where she stunned Coco Gauff and Qinwen Zheng before a three-set defeat to Jessica Pegula in the quarter-finals, and she took that form well onto clay with a semi-final exit to Aryna Sabalenka at the Stuttgart Open. Cocciaretto beat the Russian in straight sets at the Guadalajara Masters late last season but the Russian is a much better prospect in this shape. This is a really tight call between home clay advantage and form, particularly as Potapova saw three sets in each of her matches in Madrid two weeks ago. Back Potapova to win at least a set inside an accumulator or Cocciaretto to do the same on its own.
