THE PREDICTION
22-year-old Anastasia Potapova beat Coco Gauff for the second time in as many months on Thursday, this time defeating the world number six in straight sets to make a huge statement in Stuttgart. The Russian is up to a career-high WTA world ranking of 24th after some recent strong form across the Sunshine Double on hardcourts but she claimed her maiden WTA title at the Istanbul Cup last summer and indoor conditions on clay here are essentially perfect for her game. World number five Caroline Garcia beat recent Bogota champion Tatjana Maria in straight sets on Thursday to get her campaign underway solidly but the Frenchwoman has been slightly vulnerable in recent months. The pair share a 1-1 head-to-head record but this first meeting on clay will be a fascinating new test of their relatively different styles. At her best, Garcia should come through in straight sets but anything less than that makes the 29-year-old a tough player to back against a young rising star. Back Potapova to earn at least a set and leave the victor up to chance.
