THE PREDICTION

World number 28 Elise Mertens made the most of a limp performance from third seed Jessica Pegula to reach the round of 16 at Roland-Garros. The Belgian made the semi-finals of the Australian Open back in 2018 but she has twice made the last eight here in Paris in 2019 and 2020 as one of the most consistent performers at Grand Slams in the last few seasons. Former world number 11 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova had reached six quarter-finals before finally breaking her duck here in 2021, reaching the semi-finals for the first time at this level before eventually finishing runner-up to Barbora Krejcikova. The Russian has twice cone back from a set down to beat two tough compatriots in Liudmila Samsonova and Anastasia Potapova to look the slightest favourite here given her penchant for clay, particularly at Roland-Garros, but Mertens is yet to drop a set this fortnight. Back Mertens to earn at least a set to cover for another potential comeback from Pavlyuchenkova, who is vastly exceeding expectations so soon after returning to the tour from a long absence.
