THE PREDICTION

22-year-old Anastasia Potapova could set a new career-high WTA world ranking of around 21st after coming back from a set down to beat in-form Mayar Sherif on Wednesday. The Russian reached the semi-finals of the Stuttgart Open in April after excellent victories over Caroline Garcia and Coco Gauff but she has looked less effective on the more traditional outdoor clay in recent weeks. Former world number 11 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova finished runner-up to Barbora Krejcikova here in 2021 but she is currently ranked outside the top 300 after ending her season early last year to rehab a knee injury. The 31-year-old came back from a set down to stun 15th seed Liudmila Samsonova on Wednesday but it remains to be seen how well she can recover after playing a lot of matches in recent weeks.

Potapova beat her compatriot in three tight sets at the Istanbul Cup in 2021, where she claimed her maiden title a year later, but Pavlyuchenkova’s experience at this level – especially in Paris – should not be underestimated. Back the former finalist to earn at least a set and leave the victor up to chance.
