World number 38 Shelby Rogers was bumped up to the 32nd seed at the Madrid Open to avoid a tough first round match against Kaia Kanepi but she faces a clay specialist here in Ana Bogdan. World number 61 Bogdan had to come back from a set down to beat Anna Bondar on Tuesday but match practice at Madrid is especially useful given its unique conditions at high altitude and that could hand the Romanian an advantage. 30-year-old Bogdan beat Rogers, also 30, in straight sets at this stage of the Dubai Masters back in February but the American impressed on clay at the Charleston Open earlier this month with an excellent upset over Danielle Collins and a tight three-set defeat to eventual runner-up Belinda Bencic. Rogers has conceded at least a set in each of her last eight matches, including her previous meeting with Bogdan, to suggest the shrewd move here is taking Bogdan to earn at least one to leave the victor up to chance.
