THE PREDICTION

30-year-old Ana Bogdan came into the Ladies Open Lausanne at a career-high WTA world ranking of 39th after winning a Challenger event in her native Romania this weekend and she has battled well so far, beating Simona Walter and Dalila Jakupovic in three sets each. Bogdan has enjoyed some excellent results this summer across surfaces, with a huge upset over Liudmila Samsonova at Wimbledon perhaps her best, but this is no gimme against world number 84 Clara Burel. The 22-year-old is through to the quarter-finals without dropping a set against two in-form players in Olga Danilovic and Emma Navarro and back-to-back quarter-finals on her favoured clay is encouraging indeed after a slow start to 2023. Burel beat Bogdan in straight sets at the Lyon Open on an indoor hardcourt back in January but the Romanian has certainly hit her stride since.
