THE PREDICTION

World number 54 Alycia Parks should be feeling a lot looser after snapping a woeful run of six matches without a win since claiming her maiden WTA title at the Lyon Open in February. The 22-year-old overcame Anna-Karolina Schmiedlova in three sets on Wednesday to take plenty of weight off of her shoulders but she will have to play the best match of her season so far to oust two-time former finalist Victoria Azarenka. Former world number one Azarenka finished runner-up here in 2011 and 2012 and again at Rome a year later on what is generally accepted to be her weakest surface but the high altitude in Madrid hands some advantages to the more powerful players in the draw. The current world number 16 has struggled to match the intensity that saw her reach the semi-finals of the Australian Open back in January but she should have the experience here to avoid an upset in this first meeting with Parks. There is enough uncertainty here to suggest leaving this match out of an accumulator is wise but otherwise back Azarenka to win outright.
