World number 57 Ana Bogdan provided one of the bigger upsets of round one on Monday with a straight-sets victory over a good grass-courter in 15th seed Liudmila Samsonova. 30-year-old Bogdan upset fellow Romanian Sorana Cirstea in Eastbourne last week to bring some strong form into Wimbledon but she has never made it past the second round here and Alycia Parks looks dangerous on her debut. World number 51 Parks struggled with her serve but still beat Ann-Lena Friedsam in straight sets on Monday. The 22-year-old will be a force to be reckoned with on grass if she can get more control of her excellent serve, with which she stunned Caroline Garcia to win the Lyon Open back in February for her first title on tour. A first meeting between the two leaves more questions than answers but it is hard to look past Bogdan’s win over a former round of 16er in Samsonova. Back Bogdan to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
