THE PREDICTION
20-year-old Qinwen Zheng comes into the Italian Open with a great chance at a deep run as two of her best campaigns on clay have needed world number one Iga Swiatek to halt, including a three-set thriller in the round of 16 at Roland-Garros last summer. The Chinese is up to her career-high WTA world ranking of 21st after some steady work on tour so far this season but she should be targeting at least the quarter-finals here with her abilities on clay. Former world number 11 Alize Cornet beat Tereza Martincova in straight sets on Wednesday to continue some promising progress made in Madrid two weeks ago after what has been a torrid season so far. The 33-year-old has hinted that she may retire from professional tennis after Roland-Garros this summer and she will be eager to get as many matches under her belt ahead of Paris if that is the case. An injury saw Cornet retire from her first encounter with Zheng in the third round of Roland-Garros last season but whilst she should be able to put in a better performance here it still seems reasonable that the Chinese wins in straight sets.
