20-year-old Elina Avanesyan comes into the US Open at a career-high WTA world ranking of 64th after recently coming into form on the natural surfaces, with quarter-finals reached at the Berlin Open on grass and both Budapest and Lausanne on clay. The Russian has failed to win a match on hardcourts all season long, though, to look the slight underdog against Alize Cornet here but things should be tight with the Frenchwoman struggling for the majority of the season. Former world number 13 Cornet has reached the round of 16 at all four major tournaments but she broke her duck with a quarter-final exit at the Australian Open last season and she reached at least the third round at all four majors. 2023 has been less kind to the 34-year-old, with just one win at Wimbledon, but take her to earn at least a set as the likelier of the two to edge through a tough call here.
